This is after I gave my first clinic on tambourine to the percussionists at UFBA and afterwards they played pandeiro for me. Two of these guys are now in the band I just did the Wave of Bliss recording with. Moises Cruz is wearing the red Bull's basketball shirt and Ubaldo Oliveira has a white tshirt on that has blue words on it. Check out the community bloco, Akidara, he directs below. Clemeason Figueiredo, white shirt, from Ile Aye, is clapping and plays pandeiro later. professor Jorge Sacramento gives a good lesson towards the end of the clip. and Ubaldo and Moises break down the technique a bit.

This is a clip from the students I had been teaching tambourine to. That's Gil Santiago playing congos, he's one of the three percussionists in the state orchestra in Bahia. Someone has to die for you to get the percussion seat in Bahia!! He is also on the new recording.

This is Gil teaching a group of students I brought to count off while playing pandeiro. In Salvador you must dance while you play! Jorge Sacramento, the professor from UFBA, is next to him.

Akidara, the community bloco Ubaldo Oliveira directs playing at a small performance at UFBA. Ubaldo's grandmother is a priestess of candomble and he plays Atabaque in her house ceremonies since he was 6. He's using the rhythms from candomble to create his group's rhythms so it sounds very different from Samba Reggae or Timbalada style rhythms. No frame drums, just djembes and surdos.

I'm building a music video/recording studio with Tadeu Mascarenhas. We recorded the traditional rhythms and chants at Tadeu's current studio, Casa das Maquinas, for these videos. Then I filmed the video of the OrixaŽ, Iemanja, goddess of the sea danced by Rosangela Silvestre shot in Salvador on the beach of Iemanja.

Percusionists: Alcides Morais, Fabio Santos, Andre Souza, Joel Souza, from Balefolclorico; Vocalist: the incomparable Mariella Santiago, sister of Gil.

This is a sequence of clips from a Mob of Angels concert with special guests Amitava Chatterjee, Steve Gorn and Vicki Richards. St. Anne Cathedral, Winter solstice, early 90s, Brooklyn, NY. I forget exactly if it was 91 or 92. I'm in the process of archiving all the concert footage I have of the trio of Glen Velez, Steve Gorn and I from the late 80's and hope to make clips of that available soon.
